chicago born louis burns is mostly known under his moniker lil louis. the son of guitarist bobby simms, who recorded for chess and appeared with the psychedelic-soul unit rotary connection, started playing drums and bass at the age of 8. in 1974, while working at a party organized by his mother mary to unite chicago gangs, louis was asked to play after the dj fell ill. the acclaim from the crowd birthed the 12-year-old´s career as a dj. shortly after, he began djing in adult night clubs. it was during a police raid at the river´s edge club, that louis was given his now renowed stage name „lil louis“ from a riled, witty police officer. marshall julius jefferson was born in 1959 in chicago and began producing dance tracks electronically in 1985 when he was still working nights at a local post offices. in 1986 he wrote and recorded “move your body (the house music anthem)” with three postal colleagues, which was released on trax records and became his breakthrough. jefferson also produced under different aliases like hercules, virgo or in this case house to house amongst others. when the godfather of house music, frankie knuckles died at the age of 59 on march 31st 2014, the fast-moving (dance) music world stood still for a moment. the passing of one of our mentors hit many people hard, including prescription records co-founder and chicago native ron trent who participated three days later at cdr berlin, where he paid tribute to him in musical form. chicago´s herbert jeffrey “herbie” hancock doesn´t need much introduction. he is one of the best known modern jazz composers and was part of miles davis second great quintet. herbie is also one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk and soul in his music.

in 1980 he released his twenty-ninth album “monster” where he avoided jazz and funk in favor of disco songs only. the record contains the underrated “stars in your eyes”, a brilliant machine-made disco track with ray parker jr. on the guitar and gavin christopher on the vocals. Continue reading »
